I have visited Sochi the past three summers for work on the Soviet House of Rest project, and as a result have also been following the great changes that are taking place there. Some of these are in preparation for the 2014 Olympics, others are part of a larger scheme to transform the place into the Russian Riviera that it was always expected to become. The beautiful sanatorium pictured below, which was once the city’s calling card, was closed down October 1st, and a whole group of neighboring resorts may be torn down in order to build deluxe apartments and villas.
