PHYSICS 297 -- PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH

A. Purpose
The purpose of this course is to enable juniors and seniors majoring in physics to supplement their formal classroom work by participating in research programs under the direction of members of the faculty of the Department of Physics.
B. Scheduling and Credit
1. The course will be offered every quarter of the year. 2. It is purely voluntary - it is not required for either the A.B. or A.B. with Honors degrees. 3. It will carry one course credit. 4. The student is not to receive a salary 5. At the instructor's option, either letter grades or P or F may be given.
C. Application for Admission and Selection Procedures
1. Any junior or senior majoring in physics is eligible to apply for registration in this course. 2. In the quarter preceding registration, the student must apply for admission to the Departmental Adviser. 3. The Departmental Adviser will arrange for the applicant to be interviewed by those faculty members who have indicated an interest in having undergraduate participants in their research groups, and who are working in the field(s) of interest to the applicant. 4. The Departmental Adviser will then assign the applicants to research groups in a manner which will maximize the satisfaction for students and faculty member involved. 5. Registration for more than one quarter is permissible if grades in other courses do not deteriorate. In case of excessive demand, those who have not previously had a course shall have priority. 6. There is no commitment to remain in the same research group in successive quarters. D. Duties
1. The undergraduate research participant will work under the supervision of a faculty member who will be responsible for keeping track of his progress.
2. The student might be asked to assist his supervisor in the latter's work or he may be assigned a problem to work on independently, but in the latter event he should report his progress to his supervisor at least once a week.
3. The undergraduate participant is expected to spend about 15 hours a week with the research group.
4. At the end of the quarter the student must submit a written report to the Physics Department summarizing his work during the quarter. No grade will be recorded until the written report is submitted to the Physics Office along with the final grade determined by the sponsor.
5. In the quarter after the course has been completed, the student is invited to present a talk to the Undergraduate Journal Club about his work in the course.
