please explain...

I don't understand how some universities pay their football coach more salary (millions) than their professors (thousands).

Where is the priority? Are student tuitions used to fund the sport programs or are the tuitions used to fund the students' college education?

I don't even want to know how much a high school coach makes in addition to his/her teaching salary...

The dark side of science research

Novelty. Impact factor. Journal title. Star investigator.

These are some of the fine prints that change what is the altruistic philosophy behind science research. Competing labs are trying to gain an edge by publishing novel idea or data, or trying to enhance the impact of their finding. heck, it doesn't hurt to be a star investigator.

but I think the quality of the research articles must be judged more critically. For I have seen some less than convincing results in a top journal or data that cannot be reproduced by many labs. However, so much of a scientist's career depends on novelty, impact factor, journal title, and endorsements that at times, we tend to forgive some questionable data. After all, science research embodies capitalism to the fullest--full blown competition that results in progress and constant refining of knowledge. Unfortunately, the weakiest link will not survive this game.

Just curious...

If the asking price to sign A-Rod is astronomical, why are teams still interested in signing him? Just let him have an year off, and rethink his priorities, which I would think is winning that elusive championship.

I think this goes for all the high-priced athletes. If they are "free agents," let them remain free of work. Face it: A-Rod won't have a job unless a team signs him, which means that A-Rod is sort of at the mercy of the teams. Unless giving out a 300+ million contract to a player means that you will generate more profit to compensate for the loss of 300+ millions. And it's no guarantee that A-Rod will stay healthy or worth his part to collect all that cash.
