It is that time of the graduate study: Ph.D candidacy examination.

Partly excited, partly nervous.

The format of the pre-lim (colloquial for the exam) is as follows:

1) a 20 page critical review of an approved topic, and
2) an oral examination on the written topic by a committe composed of three faculty members.

I have picked my topic: Phantom Limb Phenomena.

It is something that my high school biology teacher told us during class one day and it got stuck to my head since then. The general background on phantom limb phenomena is that amputees or people suffering from congenital limb defects are able to feel/sense their missing limb(s) as if the "phantom" limbs are actually real and still exists. So they are able to grasp with the missing hand or feel the water on the missing leg when they step into the stream or water.

It is a very interesting topic, mostly sexy since people who experience phantom limb often feel pain originating from the phantom limb.

As I know more about it, I'll blog what I have learned.
