Films

Among other things, I'm behind on this weblog.

Let me write about films first. That's easy and will catch me up well over a month.

The only movie I've seen in a theater in a quite a while (since Tsotsi and Goodnight and Good Luck, which was great but maybe not best-picture nominee great) was "V for Vendetta" yesterday at the Davis. I liked it, but I must admit that I have a high tolerance for heroes who make speeches. I also have to admit that I can only barely recollect the Alan Moore comic now (but am certain that I own a copy of it still somewhere in my parent's house). Thus, I was caught by surprise in parts of the film. Natalie Portman did great work. Hugo Weaving's voice never sounded better.

6 years ago, we'd be calling this one of the great popcorn movies... now, with the film's subtext and so many of the premises having so much resonance with the defining events of our era... well, you leave feeling a little conflicted about how you should feel about it.

Netflix:
Genghis Khan: Terror and Conquest, 1995
was more from the old school scholarship on Genghis Khan... not the new, more positive, scholarship.

Chushingura, 1962
Good, but long. Perhaps too long.

Ultimate Avengers: The Movie, 2006
Nice comic book story. I like the new concepts for Nick Fury, the Hulk, and Thor.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, 2005
These are always well put-together.

Amores Perros, 2000
I liked it, fast-paced, disturbing in parts.

The Murder of Emmett Till: American Experience, 2003
Better at the general background than the other Emmett Till biography I watched.

TV/Cable:

Watched a fair amount of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Not completely awful. Some neat visuals.
Kingpin. I'd never watched Kingpin. (Despite liking to bowl!) It's good. Funny.
