What's the saddest movie you've seen?

...

Over the weekend I watched the Iraqi film "Turtles can Fly".  It falls into the category of films that capture the beautiful sadness of the human condition.  It told the story of some kurdish iraqi orphans at the outset of this current war in iraq.

The film that I've seen in the last few years that best captures this idea of beautiful sadness is "Grave of the Fireflies" which follows 2 japanese orphans in the wake of WWII.   You'd have to be some sort of heartless bastard not to fight back a tear during that movie. Here's Ebert's take from Ebert's great movies list.
