Films Via Netflix

In

In the spirit of writing something here (close to) everyday, let me say something about the last few movies I've watched via Netflix.

Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser. I like archival footage of musicians whose work I appreciate that happened to be before my time. Interesting character.

Lone Wolf & Cub Sword or Vengeance, Baby Cart in the Land of Demons, Baby Cart at the River Styx : I'm a big fan of the Lone Wolf & Cub manga by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima that was "discovered" by Frank Miller in the late 80s early 90s. Fantastic stuff. To my knowledge they've made six of these live action versions of the story, and I've now seen them all. They're not quite right, but manage to not be very wrong at the same time. Enjoyable for a fan certainly. The character they have playing Itto Ogami isn't right physically for the character, but the face is dead-on.

I've not had much to do with comic books in quite a while, but I've recently been clued in to a new series by Koike & Kojima that walks through some similar terrain -- "Samurai Executioner" -- which I'll probably just order an issue of through amazon.

My Date With Drew. Eh. If you were hoping for a how-to manual on how to successfully stalk a celebrity, this isn't for you.

Judgement at Nuremberg. A classic. I enjoy the classics. This dealt with the postwar issues of determining culpability for the atrocities committed by the third reich, and specifically grapples with the role of judges in enforcing/promoting a legal system that justified/condoned these acts. Great courtroom stuff. And a young William Shatner to boot!
