I am interested in homogeneous nucleation in the tropical tropopause, where water vapor is supersaturated with respect to ice beyond theoretical predictions. Either our understanding of the mechanisms driving homogeneous nucleation in cold ice clouds is flawed or certain factors affecting nucleation remain unaccounted for. One of these factors could be organic aerosols, which have been shown to depress the nucleation and growth of ice crystals in cold ice clouds. I hope to examine the role of organic aerosols on ice nucleation and growth at the AIDA (Aerosol Interactions and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) chamber in Germany through the use of tunable diode laser spectroscopy at wavelengths previously limited by technology.
