This webposting contains
all the data (labeled Table II) utilized in the “Epilogue” to the paperback
edition (2003) of my public-intellectuals book, along with explanatory
material (labeled Appendix: Search and Estimation Procedures). I am indebted
to Theo Arvanites, William Baude, Peter Broadbent, Tun-Jen Chiang, Carolyn
Chong, Bryan Dayton, Carl LeSueur, and Ben Traster for their invaluable
research assistance. In addition, Ms. Chong drafted the Appendix (containing
the explanatory material referred to above).
1. The first data set
(Table I) is the set actually utilized for the tables in Chapter 5. The
second data set (Table II) is the expanded set referred to in the Appendix
to that chapter.
2. Identification of
individuals in the data sets as being Jewish is based on last names plus
limited biographical inquiry; guesswork was unavoidable, and there are
undoubtedly some mistakes.
3. The Tables are in Adobe Acrobat format.
