Sites to See and Things to Do
- Zilker Park. This is a large Park just south of the river. They have really nice playscapes for kids, soccer fields, a train, some food stands, etc. Barton springs pool is also located here. It is spring fed and thus always about 70 degrees. There is also theature in the park most weekend nights.
- Austin is home to the largest urban colony of bats. They live under the Congress Street bridge and come out every evening at dusk in a giant cloud to feed. There are good views on the grassy south side of the river, on the bridge itself, or from the patio of T.G.I. Fridays.
- South Congress Ave. (SoCo) is full of eclectic little shops and weird Austin people. I recomend visiting the shops, eating a Guero's and then crossing the street to hit Amy's ice cream.
- If you feel like it the Capitol Building is always there. It's the large pink building at the North end of Congress. The mall out front and the rotunda are really nice (note how all the statues face South). And if you can't get enough Texas there is the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum is nearby, and the LBJ libray on UT's campus (they have a moon rock). The Blaton museum of art is also in the vicinity.
- Sixth Street is the Austin equivalent of Burbon Street. It's a long row of bars and clubs and every night you can find some live music.
- If you're up for a movie there is the Alamo Drafthouse which shows some interesting Austin grown stuff and feeds you durring the film. The Paramount shows old classics durring the summer. And there are ceniplexes if you are in the mood for something more mainstreem.
Resturants
Austin is very vegitarian freindly. But let them know because resturants in Texas will put meat in things you wouldn't expect (beans, vegitables, rice).
- Guero's Taco Bar has great Tex Mex. They make their own corn tortillas.
- Amy's Ice cream is an Austin chain of cold stone ice cream. They have special flavors everyday, they will mush up candy in it, and they usually do tricks.
- Manuel's is a nice TexMex place. Matt's Famous El Rancho is another nice place, but not as fancy as Manuel's. And Chuy's is the least fancy of all.
- They don't have Sonics in Chicago so we like to visit one anytime we're South. It's a drive in where the watresses wear rollerskates and will bring your food to your car. They will put chilli on anything you want and have a wide assortment of drinks.
- Threadgill's is home cooking. I like the bronzed catfish, but they also make famous chicken fried steak. It's the site of the origanal Armidillo World Headquarters so there is usually live music on weekend nights.
- Mongolian Grille is Chinese where you assemble whatever you want in your stir fry into a bowl, add some sauce, and they will grill it for you.
- For BBQ go to Rudy's,the Saltlick, Stubb's, Bill Miller, or anywhere.
- Kirbey Lane and the Magnolia Cafe serve breakfast all day (and all night). Kirbey Lane squeezes their own orange juice and makes really good pancakes and breakfast tacos.
