The VTSDA offers a wide range of classes to fit a variety of schedules and interests. For more info on private lessons, please click here, on the navbar above, or on the menu bar to your left. For registration and more information, call 773 301 6257 or email mjwingchun@comcast.net.

Open Classes

Open classes are offered three times a week. This is the backbone of the VTSDA, where we put in the work it takes to become competent kung fu fighters. These sessions are open format, students are welcome to drop in anytime during class hours and train for as long as they like.

Mon 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Wed 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Sat 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Open to all registered students.

Self Defense Seminars

The VTSDA devotes one Wednesday night every month to workshops on pure self defense and applications of our kung fu. These seminars are an opportunity to pool our knowledge, ask the difficult "what if" questions, and train for all the things that can go wrong on the street, or wherever the fight finds you.

These sessions are designed to answer simple but important questions: "how can I pull this stuff off under pressure? Am I training the art to save my life?" We take real-life situations, combine them with the elements of Ving Tsun, and break them down into practical training. We look at different kinds of attacks that could happen to you, punches, grabs from different directions, surprise attacks, knife attacks, other martial arts styles, and more.

The self defense we train is pure Ving Tsun Kung Fu with nothing added. The art has saved the lives of student and teacher alike at the VTSDA, and we believe we can teach you to how to save your own.

Wed 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Monthly, check school calendar for details. Open to all registered students.

Children's Classes

With years of experience working with children, Sifu Johnson has designed a curriculum which not only helps children build self-discipline, confidence, and self-esteem, but provides kids with solid kung fu skills.

Unlike many children's martial arts classes, which simply seek to occupy kids with exercises and drills, the VTSDA course offers children serious mental and physical preparation through time-tested methods of traditional kung fu.

Please inquire about class times.

Zen (Chan) Meditation Classes

Students at the VTSDA who practice Zen/Chan meditation find it has an extraordinary impact on the quality of their fighting. The benefits of meditation are of course manifold -- including mental clarity, alertness, focus, and inner calm. Mediation is also an extremely effective means of fighting depression, anxiety, controlling anger, and relieving stress.

The VTSDA offers Zen Meditation as a standalone course, in order to spread the benefits of meditation to the public. For many students it is an important component of both their kung fu training and overall wellness.

Sat 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Open to anyone and everyone.

Kali/Escrima Stick Fighting

Filipino Martial Arts, specifically various styles of knife, machete, and stick fighting commonly referred to as Escrima bear a great deal in common with Ving Tsun and make excellent supplements to Ving Tsun Training.

Filipino Martial Arts are also extremely effective knife fighting systems, and useful for defending against knife attacks. VTSDA Escrima classes are standalone courses, independent of regular Ving Tsun knife-defense training, but having them at the VTSDA allows for a great deal of meaningful dialogue about how these two arts intersect and relate.

Open to anyone and everyone. Please inquire about class times.

Contact Sparring

Chi sao will take you most of the way to fighting, but there's simply no substitute for contact sparring. Sparring is not the apex of Ving Tsun training but it is a necessary step in becoming a competent, expert fighter. Experienced students who have refined the basics of their kung fu and chi sao enough to maintain their structure in open fighting are eligible to participate in sparring sessions to build their positioning and pressure test their techniques.

By appointment only based on student availability. Experienced students only.
