A non-conformist by upbringing, I've always searched out unpopular and unconventional role-models. In my love of music, this has served me well. I've come across a variety of lesser respected or lesser known musicians, and have found, with research, that these people proved to be some of the true innovators in jazz. That's not to say Cab Calloway is not well known, but I think most would agree that he is remembered as a performer, rather than as a serious jazz musician. Roland Kirk is currently my favorite musician--the novelty of his music only adds to my respect for him.

Right now I'm working on a paper about Roland Kirk, so there will be a lot more info up here about him. Mostly liner notes and images from albums, I'm not old enough to have caught him live or snapped my own pictures of him. |
