Matthew Christian: Children, Science, Speed

A training log with reflections on running and bicycling. From time to time science (work) and children (family) inevitably join to make this a conversational space and open journal.

Finally had a chance to weigh in---I am at 176 which is about 6-8 down from the last time. I can tell that I am making progress in terms of pants fit, but it all progresses so slowly. I have been shooting for 170 by the end of January (which would be a 25 lb drop in a year), and I now doubt that I will make it. Moreover, I am realizing that I need to lose about 10-15 more if I am going to really make my times next spring and summer. If I am at or below 160 in another year, I will be completely blown away.

Bailed on the 32M ride this morning, which was probably a mistake. It was not as cold as I thought it would be---and had I gone out when I went to the gym, it would have been relatively pleasant. Something to remember. Instead, I rode the expresso cycle again today and was less-unimpressed with it this time. I got a very decent workout on it, with the only caveat that I am a 1-2 hour cyclist and theoretically, we are not supposed to be signed up for the machines more than 45 minutes. I think it helped that I dragged a fan over this time---if I had not wanted to lift and if I had brought a water bottle, I would have done another 13.5M lap on the course. It gives me some hope, although the 6am weekday opening time and 8am weekend opening time puts a major kink in my plans.

Once indoors, I intend to add weights and swimming to the mix, but am having trouble figuring out a schedule---mainly I like having a day off and I am unwilling to sacrifice much of the cardio work I have been doing. That latter is a bit silly. Again, I need to focus on very long term, not just 2008. Backing off of the intense cardio program for a month or two in the Winter will give me renewed zeal for it in the Spring. I need to focus on stretching and lifting for a little while and mix up the muscle groups with some swimming. Tonight I will try out a schedule that starts with the swimming and lifting and inserts the cardio in the open spaces.
