Matthew Christian: Children, Science, Speed

A training log with reflections on running and bicycling. From time to time science (work) and children (family) inevitably join to make this a conversational space and open journal.

I still hate swimming

Back on October 12th I said that the swim laps felt pretty good, even thought they were slow. Granted that it has been six weeks since I last faced the pool, but I take it all back. I hate swimming. Granted, I got up at 6, I was already tired, I was facing a stressful day . . . whatever, but I drank half the pool (again) and thought I looked like an absolute idiot. I am not sure why I have now committed myself to swimming three days/week, but I am almost certain that it is a mistake. Completely ridiculous sport.

As you know, I will talk most of that back in two weeks when I gloriously figure it all out (again) and love it a little more (again). I just hate doing things that I am not good at (see the fit chick blog if you want someone else who feels this way). The funny thing is that I am not earnestly planning to become a triathlete, I just don't want to ride my bike when it is this cold---and I am not going to gain back the 20 lbs it has taken me a year to lose.

OK, for the record then, Workout 3 from Hines:

I did not get the VKs because I got to the pool so late that I was in the shallow end. So my net "mileage" was probably only about 750 yards. Also put about 10 minutes on the stationary cycle just to get a little more out of the morning. I may lift on the swim days, at least until I am up to an hour-long workout in the pool. I cannot really share a lane at this point because I am such a poor swimmer---and I feel bad taking up a perfectly good lane which could be used by a perfectly good swimmer. Oh well. We will see how Friday goes.
