Matthew Christian: Children, Science, Speed

A training log with reflections on running and bicycling. From time to time science (work) and children (family) inevitably join to make this a conversational space and open journal.

Day Off

The period we are in right now is what I will call my 'off-season' and by that I mean that I am not really training with the intensity of the previous months. In part it has become a time to retool and get myself back into full mechanical health before starting up again in 2008. To that end, I decided to bag the scheduled run for today and spend some time reading my swimming and weight-lifting books. The hard thing is that I REALLY want the run and I am having to restrain myself in these slow days.

When I first started out, I hit that early high and wanted to run and bike much longer than was healthy. That also occurs post-race when one wants to really move forward and starts to push it. Moving over to swimming and lifting for the next few months should help temper this because they require me to go slow at first (since I have no idea what I am doing).

Long run is still scheduled for Saturday and I am excited about it. And I swim tomorrow, which is a little less exciting.
