Matthew Christian: Children, Science, Speed

A training log with reflections on running and bicycling. From time to time science (work) and children (family) inevitably join to make this a conversational space and open journal.

Dead beat

After SESP's final dinner at the Shedd, we got everyone back to the Westin on a bus . . . except one. Ponterelli Transportation sent us six busses, one of which was supposed to have a lift for a wheelchair. The lift was broken. On the way TO the Shedd, we very quickly got a cab from the Westin that worked. On the way back, however, we called Flash Cabs (the only company in Chicago with wheelchair lifts on its fleet) at 10:30pm and the cab arrived at 1:40pm. By the time I dropped off the Zipcar I was driving and made it back home it was after 2am.

Jeffrey and Liz managed the show and were absolute troopers, especially since Jeffrey had been working the conference since 6am. Needless to say, I could hardly move this morning.

I love Chicago and it is for that reason that I am completely appalled that we are such a pathetic town that it takes 3 hours on a Saturday night to get a taxi. We even had that conversation with the dispatcher that we would make it worth anyone's while to get over to Shedd. I would have gladly paid $100+ for that ride if it had been anywhere like on time. Anyway, off to St.L. around noon today---completely shot. See if we can get up and run tomorrow.
