When I finished the MBA program in May 2006, I started getting serious about taking care of myself and began running 3-days each week. Once I joined the U of C Commmunity, I added some weight lifting about 2 days each week, but overall, it was just a maintenance routine and I was letting it slide to 2 days on busy weeks. In January of 2007, a bout with shingles and the need to get a new primary care physician got me to the Doctor's office where I found out I was topping 193 lbs. I decided not to let my workouts slide anymore. But moving up, even to four days of running would always result in an injury and I was growing frustrated.

Shortly before the birth of my son in May, I made two changes. First, I got myself fitted for new running shoes at Fleet Feet Sports. They were a full size larger than I had been wearing, but my frequent injuries disappeared (after a few days of blisters from the new shoes). I also bought a used Trek 1500 and started riding a few days each week to up my workouts. I think that I first really rode on Sunday, June 24, and I did not make it all the way to the end of the lakefront path. On the return, I was unbelievably spent.

Today I rode all the way up an back, averaging 16.5 mph over the 32 miles. For now this will be the weekly logbook.
