SOFT PINK TRUTH
GENRE POLITICS
HMU226 (HISTORICAL SURVEYII)
|
 |
Unfortunately, I'm not being paid to do any of this work quite yet, but
one can always hope (well, I am getting paid for the teaching).
These are all projects I have worked on, or am working on, although the
list is not at all exhaustive. While these projects are posted here
for those who share my interests, some material is password-protected
to restrict access to those directly involved in a project (usually for
copyright reasons). Enjoy!

Music
Studies
- The
Soft Pink Truth: A Case Study
-
This is a sort of 'trial run' for my doctoral dissertation.
There's a reluctance among popular music scholars to actually engage
the sounds of popular music. This makes for an unbalanced,
context-heavy scholarship that requires some correction. Luis
to the rescue!
- Genre Politics: Genres
and Identities in Electronic Dance Music
-
While it's become a bit taboo to make essentialist
claims about genre and style such as "rap is black" or "country
is white," nonetheless, it's just as difficult to suggest that
musical genres exist completely outside of our identities. This
is especially true when we consider how identities are used to define
and maintain genre boundaries.
