Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship Program, Fellowship PERSONAL STATEMENT I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Advancing Research and
Communication at the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at The
University of Chicago, where I lead the center’s investigation of achievement
gaps in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. I
study means to bridge these gaps, in particular, models for facilitating the
achievement of underrepresented groups in STEM. This research complements my broader body
of work, on the mechanisms underlying racial and ethnic disparities in
post-secondary educational attainment. I received my Ph.D. from the
University of Chicago, in the Department of Comparative Human Development. My
dissertation was a mixed-methods longitudinal study of the postsecondary
pathways of high-aspiring Latino and ethnic minority youth in Chicago, for
which I was awarded the Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowship for
Research Related to Education. I have produced articles on social networks in
relation to the education of children and youth, neighborhood change pathways
in Chicago neighborhoods, measuring ethnic and racial integration in the
Chicago metropolitan area, and am preparing a book manuscript for publication
on the educational pathways of underrepresented groups. As an active member
of the social science and educational research community, I have served in
several professional associations and review boards. I am currently serving
as Publications Chair for the American Sociological Association’s section on
Children and Youth and as a Lead Reviewer for the American Educational
Research Association Annual Meeting, for the Division on the Social Context
of Education. CURRICULUM VITAE - Click here *
