Getting poesis all over your family

Make the Pie Higher

I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It's a world of madmen
And uncertainty
And potential mental losses.

Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the internet
Become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?

They misunderestimate me.
I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish
Can coexist.

Families is where our nation finds hope
Where our wings take dream.
Put food on your family!
Knock down the tollbooth!
Vulcanize society!
Make the pie higher!
Make the pie higher!

TONIGHT! WEDS. JULY 11th ~ ASHTRAY BOY @ EMPTY BOTTLE

Tonight marks a special occasion: my first show with Ashtray Boy after reuniting with Randall and Carla for the first time in nearly eight years! We'll be playing with the witty and quite excellent Let's Get Out of This Terrible Sandwich Shop, and our good friend, Canadian singer/songwriter extraordinaire John Lennox (who'll be doing a solo electric set.)

Show starts at 9:30 and is $8. John Lennox is first, Sandwich Shop in the middle, and us last. Empty Bottle is located at 1035 N. Western Avenue, one block north of Augusta Blvd. and three blocks south of Division St. (Go here for directions)

Hope you can make it out and say hello!

Cheers,
J. (and Randall and Carla) (and Rupert)

Brief band synopsis:

Our singer Randall Lee is from Australia, and was formerly in the
semi-legendary Sydney-based indie pop band The Cannanes. He and I
formed Ashtray Boy here in Chicago in 1992, with help from Dave
Trumfio (Pulsars) and Liz Phair, who also appear on our first album,
The Honeymoon Suite (Feel Good All Over Records). Our subsequent three
albums were released on Tim Adams's Ajax Records, former home of the
Mountain Goats. Randall is now married to Carla Bruce-Lee (nee Bruce;
formerly of Sabalon Glitz) and the two live in Melbourne with their
four year old, Rupert; they still travel to the U.S. every few years
to tour and record. Since leaving Ajax the band has released four more
albums; eight total to date. For this latest Summer jaunt, I've
reunited with the band for the first time in seven years. The Lees and
I will be in town together, playing shows and recording a new album (number 9 to date!) from July 3-23.
