Pueraria lobata, Lower
As you may have surmised from an earlier posting, I'm working on a book about the R.E.M. album Murmur. Sometimes, though, I get tired of my own navel-gazings and want to hear what other people thought about this album when they first heard it (or what they think of it now, for that matter.) Now's your chance to step up to the mic. Email me with your Murmur musings. Who knows -- I may end up using your quote in the book. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Smashing Time
Dan Treacy of the Television Personalities has apparently just been released from prison in England, where he was serving time at HMP The Weare, a floating prison barge used in the Falklands war. Dan's activities since he "disappeared" in 1998 -- his struggles with mental illness, addiction, homelessness and poverty -- are gradually being pieced together by TVPs fans, and they've set up a blog for Dan as well.

Making the Data Scene
If you live in Chicago, check out my cover story in the Reader later this week -- it's about Loren Wilson and his Pitchformula project (a computer-driven, statistical analysis of record reviews on Pitchfork). [UPDATE 7/13/04: Here's a link to a scan of the article on Wilson's website.] [UPDATE 7/15/04: Also, a text version here at the U of C News Office website.]
