Jeffrey Flory is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Becker Center on Chicago Price Theory at the University of Chicago. He uses field experiments and household surveys to explore questions in development, finance, and gender. His research in low-income countries centers on microfinance and risk, food security, and health outcomes. In developed economies his current work focuses on competition incentives. His research on gender spans both low- and high-income countries.

Jeffrey has experience in rural areas of Africa, India, Mexico, and China. He speaks French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and some Chichewa. Prior to his PhD, he worked as a business and economics journalist in China.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Becker Center, Jeffrey is extending his dissertation research on the spillover effects of microfinance, and examining new questions on the effects of competition.

His research in Malawi examines how financial markets expansion affects informal insurance practices in villages. He finds that formal financial services can alter inter-household transfer practices, which heavily affects both consumption-smoothing and income-smoothing among non service-users. Food-intake and health outcomes are most strongly affected among the poorest, while other households alter production activities. [Links to this research]

Jeffrey Flory also researches links between gender and behavior. One of his studies uses an experiment in a naturally occurring labor market to test predictions from the lab that differences in willingness to compete cause gender imbalances in the US labor force. This research, which is joint with John List (University of Chicago) and Andreas Leibbrandt (Monash University), has drawn press coverage from several outlets. [Links to this research]

Jeffrey received his B.A. from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.
