TEACHING

I believe that a sociological perspective can open up powerful new ways of seeing the world.  As such, I believe that teaching sociology should generate an experience of discovery for students.  To do this, I use a Socratic style in the classroom, interspersed with mini-lectures, that requires students to develop insight into challenging readings and issues through articulation.  I use online discussion and media to extend these dialogues beyond the classroom.  I assign reflective essays and research projects—ethnographic, archival, quantitative—that encourage students to apply and refine the ideas and methods we develop.

My teaching interests are broad, and I have taught courses about economic sociology, organizations and work; science, technology and society; social policy; and social theory.  In 1992 I co-founded an independent high school where I served as executive director and pioneered a project-based curriculum in social studies and world history.  I have served as a teaching assistant for courses in organizations and public policy, economic sociology, the history and philosophy of science, and negotiations.
