The Stereotyping & Prejudice Research Laboratory in the Psychology Department at the University of Chicago is devoted to understanding the effect of group membership on our perceptions of others and of ourselves. We study a wide variety of topics, such as the tendency for racial outgroups to trigger a sense of danger as well as the capacity of an ingroup to foster a sense of common purpose and belonging.

Our work is guided by a desire to understand these phenomena and the psychological processes that promote them. Our ulitmate goal is to bring this knowledge to bear on real world issues, whether it be a police officer's decision to shoot, or a partisan's ability to move beyond group conflict to truly understand the perspective of a one-time adversary.

These pages describe the people who conduct this work and some of our research.
