Students in Rome consider the Ara Pacis of Augustus in its present environment, enclosed
by glass.

Ara Pacis of Augustus (aram Pacis Augustae)

Augustus's Altar of Peace

The complex to which the Res Gestae belonged included the Mausoleum of Augustus, two obelisks, the Ara Pacis, the Ustrinum and two pillars on which the Res Gestae was carved.  The altar of the Ara Pacis is encased in a glass building.  It was used as a site for sacrificing animals.  There are drain holes for the sacrificial blood to flow out from the structure.  As well, there is a copy of the copper plaque on which the Res Gestae was written, a tribute to Augustus and the peace and prosperity he brought to the ancient Roman world.  For a more information and a tour of the Ara Pacis click here.
