Don Jacobs, Clarinet Don plays clarinet and saxophone. He has performed professionally since 1977. He has performed Jewish music since 1983 in different groups, including the Ensemble M'chaiya, Jazmer, and the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. In addition, Don has played international folk dance music with the group Jutta and the Hi-Dukes since 1990. Don played in another group led by Issa Boulos during 1998 and 1999, the Issa Boulos Quartet. This group played at the Jerusalem Festival of Arabic Music and Jazz in July 1999, and at festivals and concerts in Chicago and the Midwest. Don's teachers have included George Silfies, Rich Corpolongo, Jim Stoynoff, Issa Boulos and Wendy Brannen. Don also teaches students on clarinet and saxophone.
Jennifer Trowbridge, Guitar Jennifer earned a Master of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance from Northwestern University and a Bachelor's degree in musicology from the University of Chicago. While a student, she performed in master classes with David Russel, William Kannengiser, Roberto Aussel and others. Her post-graduate training has included master classes with Robert Guthrie at Southern Methodist University at Taos, in Taos, New Mexico, with Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland, and additional classes with Sergio Assad, Oscar Ghiglia, and Sharon Isbin.
Jonathan Paul, Bass Acoustic and Electric Bassist Jonathan Paul received his Bachelor of Music Degree with a concentration in Jazz Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington. While there, he studied with David Baker and performed with his professional group (David Baker's 21st Century Bebop Band). He also began his study and performance of Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music in Bloomington. Returning home to Chicago, Jonathan began performing with guitarist Fareed Haque. He has been a member of Fareed's band for the last seven years, touring the U.S., Central America and Europe and a member in the Issa Boulos Ensemble for the last two. In addition, this group recorded Blue Note releases "Opaque" and "Déjà Vu". Jonathan is also a member of pianist Deanna Witkowski's group, performing at the Kennedy Center's "Women in Jazz" festival in Washington D.C. Deanna's group has recorded the Jazzline Records release "Having To Ask." Jonathan has also performed with Danilo Perez, Jim Snidero, Howard Levy, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Paulinho Garcia, Steve Million, Grazyna Augiscik, and Jesus "Chuchito" Valdez. For the last five years Jonathan has taught Bass and Jazz Combos at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL.
Kinan Abou-Afach, cello Cello player Kinan Abou-Afach earned a Master degree in Cello Performance and a Bachelor's degree in 'ud and cello from the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, Syria. While in Syria, Kinan studied cello with Pavel Coupin, Rasi Abdullaiev, and Valery Volkov. He moved to Chicago in 2000 and attended DePaul University in Chicago to pursue graduate studies in cello with Steve Balderston. Kinan has performed Western repertoire and Middle Eastern repertoire with several groups. In recent years, Kinan has been exploring various aspects of Middle Eastern music and is currently composing original music that music is based on maqam and improvisational ideas that reflect the Middle-Eastern philosophy and musical aesthetics.
Naomi Gonzalez , violin Naomi commenced her violin studies at the age of six at the D.C. Youth Orchestra program. She then later moved to Puerto Rico and continued her studies at the Puerto Rico Conservatory Prep. Program. In this institution she was trained in European solfege, chamber and orchestral repertoire and private lessons. In 1998 she won the Emerson Co. competition and was awarded full scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Camp that summer. At the age of seventeen she was the youngest musician to join the Puerto Rico Symphony. In 2000 she toured to Spain and France as concertmaster of the DePaul Symphony. She is now finishing her undergraduate degree in performance at DePaul University studying under Mr. Mark Zinger. She has been invited several times to participate in the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico and has played with a wide variety of classical and ethnic ensembles including Salsa and Tropical orchestras, classical Middle-Eastern ensembles and Afro-Cuban Jazz ensembles. She has substituted in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the North Park Orchestra. She is currently the youngest teacher at the People's Music School.
