Welcome
to my homepage.
I am an
Assistant Professor in the Department
of Political Science at the University
of Chicago.
My general
fields of study are American Institutions and Political Methodology, with
particular interests in Political Parties and American Political History.
I am currently
working on three main projects. The first, McDonald’s,
Martin van Buren, and the American Mass Party, examines the incentives for
ideological unity among party elites created by the presence of shared party
labels.
The second
project in collaboration with Mike Munger
is an investigation of the development of southern attitudes toward slavery
from the Founding period through the Civil War.
The third
project is a critique of contemporary Political Methodology. This work develops
a family of arguments in favor of parsimonious statistical models that are
rigorously derived from formal theory.
