Super Bowl 2007: that damned Miami rain

They didn't win.

They couldn't win.

The Colts offense was too much to handle; the Colts defense was riding on optimism and confidence and all of those other intangible that suddenly aren't intangible when you step out onto the field.

And they couldn't deal.

Now I have to write a column about supporting the Bears from Spain, and I don't know where to start. Having some common denominator, having that local bond, suddenly means a whole lot less when your team doesn't win, when you fracture into debates about the quarterback's ability and the defense's collapse, and fail to see that it was all a shambles to begin with.

But anyway, the rallying point was the important part, I suppose.

I'm still proud of the 2006 Bears. I'm still proud of this team, and I look forward to next season. Maybe then Rex will have the experience. Maybe then the offense will find some stability. This season we saw a lot of potential that ultimately fell short of the fans' expectations, but nevertheless, it gave us something to cheer about.

I can't imagine Chicago right now, and if I even try I'll probably burst into tears. How do I go to class tomorrow, how do I make myself wake up in two and a half hours, and function like the dream never ended?

(Correct answer: I draw strength from the knowledge that life goes on.

Realistic answer: I can't.)
