Instructions for Accessing PostScript Documents from the WWW Page

For four different computing environments, I list the steps to access a WWW page, download a Postscript file, and then view or print that file. The four environments - a PC with Windows, a Mac, a UNIX VT100 terminal, and a UNIX graphics terminal - can all be found at USITE or other campus computing centers. I try to update these instructions as I learn new tricks and/or the University computer centers update their equipment and software. and are marked .

A PC with Windows

A. Access a WWW Browser

  1. Start Windows on a USITE PC (similar instructions probably apply to other campus PC's that are connected to the University network).
  2. Open the Netscape folder (which can be found in the Program Manager).
  3. Double click on the Netscape icon in the Netscape folder to start Netscape.
NOTE: On the new USITE Windows NT machines, just click on the "Internet Explorer" icon.

B. Access the Casey Mulligan WWW Page

  1. Click on the "Open" icon or choose File/Open Location.
  2. Enter my WWW address:
    http://www.spc.uchicago.edu/users/cbm4/
There are also other (easier) ways to access my WWW page: (a) save my address on your "hot list" or list of "favorites", (b) Do a Net Search (eg., Alta Vista) for "Mulligan Economics", (c) from the UofC home page, choose Academic Units/Social Sc./Economics/Faculty.
  3. Locate the Economics Class Materials using the left-hand menu frame.

C. Download the desired file(s) to your PC's hard disk and print.

  1. On the www page, click on the desired Postscript file. Netscape may be linked with a viewer which will allow you to view the file. If so, you can view the file at this stage. If not, Netscape will give you the option to save to disk. Choose that option.
  2. Choose a file name. Remember the name and location!
  3. Open a DOS window (eg., switch from Netscape to Program Manager by press Alt-Tab and then double clicking on the DOS prompt icon in the Main folder of the Program Manager). Type the DOS command:
    copy filename LPT2:
Where filename is the name of the file that you saved in step (ii) (including the directory name if you are not already in that directory). Some PC's may use LPT1: or LPT3: instead of LPT2: (eg., the PCs at I-House use LPT1: and the new USITE Windows NT PCs may use LPT1:)
NOTE: It is also possible to copy filename to LPT2: without opening a DOS window:
  1. locate your file with the Windows File Manager
  2. choose File/Copy
  3. In the "To:" field, type LPT2:

A Mac

A. Access a WWW Browser

  1. Open the Netscape folder (which can be found in the Communications folder of the Mac HD).
  2. Double click on the Netscape icon in the Netscape folder to start Netscape.

C. Download the desired file(s) to your Mac's hard disk and use "Drop_PS" to print.

  1. On the www page, click on the desired Postscript file. Netscape will give you the option to save to disk. Choose that option (if available, click on the "desktop" button before saving so that you are sure that the file is saved to the desktop).
NOTE: If you are not given an option to save the file, go back to the www page and CLICK AND HOLD on the link to the PS file. A menu will appear the allows you to save to a file.
  2. Choose a file name. The file should appear on your Mac's "desktop."
  3. To print, double click on the postscript file's icon or drag the file(s) to the Drop_PS icon (which can be found in the "graphics/sound viewers" subfolder of the utilities folder on the Mac HD).
NOTE: I have found the Drop_PS program to fail because it was not configured for the correct printer. If you obtain a printing error, try:
    1. Open the utilities folder of the Mac HD
    2. Open the "Graphics/sound viewers" folder
    3. Double click on the Drop_PS icon
    4. Choose File/Preferences
    5. Click on the "Set" button and choose a printer that works. What printer works?! At USITE, I've found "USITE Central Spooler" to work
    6. After the correct printer is set, try again to double click on the postscript file's icon.

A UNIX Machine with a VT100 or similar Terminal

A. Access a WWW Browser and the Casey Mulligan WWW Page

  1. Logon to a UNIX machine with a VT100 terminal (eg., at SSPPCC or from your home via telnet or over a modem). You must have an account on the UNIX machine and that machine must have the lynx browser software. "quads" and "ellis" are two examples.
  2. At the UNIX prompt, type:
    lynx http://www.spc.uchicago.edu/users/cbm4/
  3. Locate the Economics Class materials using the left-hand menu frame.

B. Download the desired file(s) to your account and print.

  1. Arrow to the desired file and press enter. When prompted, choose the "download" and "Save to Disk" options.
  2. Choose a file name. Remember the name.
  3. At the UNIX prompt, type:
    lpr -Pprinterid filename
Where filename is the name of the file that you saved in step (ii). printerid is the name of the printer where you want to print. For example "uslw1" is a printer at the center of USITE. For example, to print the file E231syll.ps to this printer:
    lpr -Puslw1 E231syll.ps

A UNIX Machine with a Graphics Terminal

A. Access a WWW Browser

  1. Login to a USITE UNIX machine with a graphics terminal (many of them are labeled "Silicon Graphics." Use your quads or ellis login and password.
  2. Choose Apps/network/Netscape 2.02

B. Access the Casey Mulligan WWW Page

  1. Choose File/Open Location.

C. Download the desired file(s) and print or view.

View
  1. Click on the desired Postscipt file. Netscape will display the file in a viewer. The viewer may issue a message that the font has been changed, but that's OK.
Print
  1. On the www page, RIGHT click on the desired Postscipt file.
  2. Choose "Save Link As"
  3. Choose a file name. Remember the name and location!
  4. Open a VT100 window (eg., choose Apps/network/VT100). Type the UNIX command:
    lpr -Pprinterid filename
Where filename is the name of the file that you saved in step (ii). printerid is the name of the printer where you want to print. For example "uslw1" is a printer at the center of USITE. For example, to print the file E231syll.ps to this printer:
