Beatrice Jauregui

Hello and welcome to my web site. It has not been properly updated since 2005, and I never really had much flare for web design, so it's kind of lame, sorry. What can I say, this was started when I was an undergraduate some ten years ago now, and my interest in it--to say nothing of my capabilities as a web site manager--have waned (or, in the latter case, perhaps never really existed). In any case, I am pleased at your arrival, and look forward to hearing from you.

Exploration of my multiple personalities commences below.

The Scholar

In Fall 2002, I embarked on the long road of pursuing a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Chicago. I completed my M.A. Thesis in Spring 2004, critiquing theories of how legitimacy is constructed, and attempting to tease out the genealogy of the relationship between law and coercion through historicization of law enforcement in India. I am currently "in the field" conducting an ethnography of law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh. For more detailed info., please contact me.

Prior to becoming a wee pre-professor, I worked as a Research Specialist at the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI), a policy research institute at the University of Pennsylvania, where I attained my BA in Sociology and Psychology.

My work at CASI centered primarily on studies of political economy, international relations, and problems of governance and civil society. My broad interests include anthropology of law and the state, ethnic violence, political theory, military theory and practice. I am also a Fellow and former administrator at the (now-defunct) Solomon Asch Center for Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict.

Curriculum Vitae (updated Autumn 2007)

The Explorer

Conjoined twin of the scholar...
A favorite passtime -- seeking (un?)common ground. Again, this section is way under-updated... I have more photos than I know what to do with, so this is mostly just a list. Selected past journeys, include:

Greece, Italy and Turkey
India
Northern California
New Orleans
Geneva
Turkey
Thailand
The Maldives
Sri Lanka
Indiana Dunes
India

The Epicurean

I..................LOVE..................TO................EAT.
Thank you.

Some good eateries in Philadelphia (pretty thin, I know--well a bunch of my old links went the way of the dodo, sorry):

New Delhi
Pat's King of Steaks
(I've been in Chicago 4-5 years now, and have lotsa favorites, but no time to make links here! Ph.D. land does that to you... may try to put up some recommendations soon!)

The Mutt

I had originally titled this category "The Genealogist," but that was carrying my "work done" a bit too far, and didn't quite cut it. Nor did "The Family Girl." So, if you haven't figured it out yet, here's some information on my background, in case you were asking yourself, "What kind of surname IS that, anyway?"

Jauregui
Neilon
Basque
Irish
There's also some Swedish and Scottish-English and I think Dutch thrown into my personal gene pool for good measure. But I must admit to being even less in touch with that heritage than the rest of it. One might deem me the quintessential victim of the American "melting pot" ideal...

Seahorses

I could not think of a better place to put this link, but I feel like sharing my love for seahorses, so check it out...

Thanks for visiting. Like me, this site is perpetually under construction (or, at this point, more analogous to a government project that's had its funding cut in the middle and may or may not continue, depending on interests of parties involved and potential kickbacks). "Thank you, come again."
