Alex Stephenson · composer

Alex Stephenson (b. 1990, Philadelphia) is an undergraduate music student at the University of Chicago, where he studies composition with Yao Chen. Prior to his matriculation there, he studied with Philadelphia composer Joseph Nocella.

Performances of his music include those by the University of Chicago New Music Ensemble, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, cellist Nicholas Photinos of eighth blackbird, radio station WRSU-FM (Rutgers University), Suburban Music School (Media, PA), and Strath Haven High School (Wallingford, PA). Other recent engagements include a masterclass with Frederic Rzewski.

Alex has been invited to attend such festivals as Music09 and the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts. He has received additional honors and awards from ASCAP and the New York Art Ensemble, among others.

Also an accomplished instrumentalist, Alex presently studies piano with Svetlana Belsky at the University of Chicago. He previously studied piano with Joseph Nocella and cello with Mara Parker, both in Philadelphia.
