T o u f o u l A b o u - H o d e i b

I am a postdoctoral fellow of 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' research program (2010/2011) in Berlin. I completed my dissertation at the University of Chicago (2010) on the middle class home in late Ottoman Beirut and how it came to be understood and experienced through institutional and intellectual frameworks, as well as through popular consumption practices. The work is a synthesis of 20 months of archival research -- funded by an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship -- in Beirut, Istanbul, London, Paris, and Nantes. With an eye to similar developments in Egypt, Turkey, and Iran, my long-term, theoretical aim is to understand how specific categories of culture, such as taste, came to mediate the experience of modernity in the Middle East.
