My name is Rick Moore and I’m a Ph.D. student in sociology at the University of Chicago. My primary research interests center around culture and religion, specifically everyday religion, ways people use the category "religion," and the interaction between religions and the state.

More generally my research explores how categories of knowledge become institutionalized and how these processes of institutionalization impact everyday life. I am also concerned with the ways these kinds of questions relate to larger issues of social theory including those of differentiation and secularization.

One way I've studied these issues empirically is through an investigation of how cultural discourses, in interaction with particular organizational and political environments, influence the meaning of international religious freedom.
