Welcome to my personal pages at the University of Chicago. Here you’ll find information on my past explorations in Archaeology and Anthropology, as well as current interests and projects.

As of 2012 most of my time is dedicated to my doctoral research and  parenting.

My dissertation study — Roman Colonialism and the Globalization of Local Communities: Exploring the Material Dimensions of Rural Lifeways in Transition along the Lower Rhineland Frontier — is supported by a generous contribution of the Wenner-Gren Foundation.

Whenever possible, I try and squeeze in updating these web pages. Currently accessible research pages include those relating to my work on Roman Uzita (link). I will soon add pages on a project entitled SAM (Subjectivity, Action and Materiality), an interactive tool for conceptualizing social life and teaching social science.

Some personal tidbits not found in my CV...

I was born and raised in the Netherlands and am the youngest of three siblings. My mother is of Dutch/German and my father of Moroccan descent. Working-class mentalities and immigrant experiences have shaped my family’s history to a significant degree.

I am married to Kim Brooks Mata, who is a gifted dance performer and choreographer, and currently serves as the Interim Head and Artistic Director of Dance at the University of Virginia Department of Drama (UVa article).

We are the proud parents of two fun-loving and adventurous boys.
