My research and teaching focus on the histories of American immigration and citizenship from the early nineteenth century to the present.  I am interested in understanding how immigrants in the past learned about U.S. nationalism and interpreted its role in their lives. I am also fascinated by the varied uses of the ‘immigrant narrative’ in American culture, and how mass immigration has affected the way native-born people in the United States see themselves both as individuals and as members of a dynamic national community.

In my work at the American Historical Association, I get to help implement new and ongoing efforts to improve communication among all historians.  I particularly enjoy being a part of the AHA’s mission to promote the awareness of history in public life.
