Welcome to my website! I am currently a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago. I'm originally from small town, North Carolina. I'm a social philosopher who eventually grew to need empirical research to test my ideas. This, in combination with my interest in community development, led me to sociology - in particular, the study of political and economic organizations.
I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Sociology at the Unviersity of Chicago. My interests and work have largely evolved with my technical skills. Most influentially, I learned how to code in Python and R and the world of data science has opened up to me. I helped start the Computational Social Sciences workshop and have a big data research project on the emergence of the gender system on Donorschoose.org. At the heart of becoming a sociologist for me is an emergent taste for what is sociologically interesting and designing a research project to bring it to life. In this vein, I am developing a dissertation on the operation of power in organizations. Specifically, I'm designing an observation and interview study of high schools and prisons. You can find out more about these projects in my Current Research section.
Before becoming a sociologist and during my earlier years in the Ph.D. program, I worked with nonprofit organizations doing program evaluation and other research support services. Between my drifting research interests and shrinking time however, I no longer have any active projects in the community. Still, this practical work is an important part of how I became who I am and something I might always be interested in getting back into. You can find out more about my practical side in my Work with Nonprofits section.
Lastly, my favorite hobby is coming up with random ideas for businesses, nonprofits, smart phone applications, and art projects among other things. I'll never be able to do anything with 98% of the things I come up with, so I outline them (to a greater or lesser extent) on my Ideas page. Feel free to steal any idea and do what you want with it. I have a CC BY License.
