barn

I like a man's knowledge to comprehend more than one class of topics, one row of shelves. . . . I like a man who likes to see a fine barn as well as a good tragedy.

--Ralph Waldo Emerson (Journal, 1828)

Scent of Sunlight

poetry by Jibanananda Das

The Bengali poet Jibanananda Das (1899-1954) is one of the most renowned of those to succeed Rabindranath Tagore in the rich tradition of Bangla literature. "Scent of Sunlight," my selection from among his corpus of poems, is here presented in a bilingual format, Bangla originals facing my translations of the same. The introduction offers a nontechnical entrée into Jibanananda's poetry and his place in contemporary Bengali cultural thinking. The poems themselves, which come in Adobe™ "pdf" format, are best viewed on a large screen in the side-by-side screen display mode. The Bangla original will appear on the left and the English translation on the right. A modest file of notes concludes this digital book.
